What is a perineal massage?
Perineal massage is a gentle technique used in late pregnancy to stretch and soften the tissue between the vagina and anus (the perineum) to help it feel more flexible for birth. It may reduce discomfort and lower the chance of tearing for some mums.

How do I do a perineal massage?
With clean hands, apply a small amount of lubricant or oil and gently massage the lower vaginal area using a “U-shaped” motion with light pressure for a few minutes. Many mums start from around 34–36 weeks and do it a few times a week, but stop if there’s pain or bleeding and check with your doctor.

Do perineal massages work?
Perineal massage may help reduce perineal tearing and the need for episiotomy in some women, especially first-time mums. Results vary, but many find it helps them feel more prepared and in control.

How long does a perineal tear take to heal?
Most mild to moderate perineal tears heal within 2–6 weeks, while deeper tears can take longer and may need extra follow-up care. If pain worsens, there’s swelling, fever, or unusual discharge, seek medical advice.
