When Is Your Baby Ready For A High Chair

As your baby grows up and through various milestones, you may be wondering if there’s a right time to do things like to shift them to a high chair for feeding or move them to a larger crib in their room.

When buying a high chair, some of the key factors you should look out for are its safety features, durability, versatility, and size. Not only would these factors help your baby gain proper stability when using it, but it’s also a form of investment that will make your life as a parent easier.

With our Alpha+ High chair, your little one will be able to use the high chair from birth to 90kg (as an adult chair!). It is designed to last you for a lifetime, across your baby’s milestones, and can be used for years even after your baby has grown. The Alpha+ High chair is compatible with the Alpha Bouncer and the Alpha Tray attachments to suit your little one’s needs as they grow.

The Alpha Bouncer has a cuddly seat insert and a 3-point safety harness, so rest assured that your little bub will always be safe and comfortable. It is designed to hold up to 9kg, which is around 5 months old, where you will transition your little one to the Alpha Tray attachment.

We understand how babies will fuss when you are not within their sight, and having meals together with your family at the dining table can be quite challenging. With the Alpha Bouncer, you can simply attach it to the Alpha+ high chair and have your little one join you at the dining table during mealtimes! Giving your fullest attention while having your meals will not be a challenge anymore.

As your little one grows, you will notice the following milestones that will also indicate that your little one is ready to sit on the high chair.

1. When they can sit upright

When your child can sit upright on their own without falling over, this means that their back has developed sufficiently to allow them to sit up comfortably.

You can take this as a pretty good sign that they’re ready to be seated in a high chair!

2. When they can hold their head up

Another sign you should look out for is when your baby is able to hold their heads up by themselves. A baby’s ability to hold their head up means they’ve developed strong neck muscles -- this is necessary to feed your baby safely in an upright position.

If their head and neck still need support sometimes, then it may be too early to introduce them to a high chair. Try again in a couple of weeks!

3. When they show proper stability

Your baby shouldn’t fall over or loll around when placed in the high chair. This is also the reason why choosing a good high chair is important.

Typically, you can start to introduce your baby to a high chair at the age of 6 months as this is when they have good control of their necks and can sit upright. This is also usually the time when you’ll likely start to introduce solid foods to your child. Having a high chair helps keep your baby in the proper upright position for eating -- making mealtimes a safe and enjoyable experience for them.

As your little one starts to transition into solids, you should consider having a highchair with a feeding tray, as that could be beneficial in containing the mess that comes with eating solids, especially if you’re going to let your little one feed himself.

Remember we mentioned how the Alpha+ High chair can be used for a lifetime and through your baby milestones? With your little one starting on solids, you can easily convert the Alpha+ High chair simply by switching out the bouncer attachment with the Alpha Tray for easy feeding and fuss-free mealtimes. The Alpha Tray also comes with a removable plastic counterpart for easy washing. More yum, and less mess!

Things to remember

Some things to be mindful of when feeding your baby in a high chair:

  • Never leave your baby unattended in the chair.

  • Always strap your baby with the safety belt.

  • Before using the high chair, ensure that all the parts are properly fixed and screwed in place. You may also want to ask the store staff about its safety mechanisms before purchasing.

  • Ensure that tables, countertops, or breakable items are not within your baby’s reach for safety reasons.
